When re-instating a former member, I am able to allocate the person to a role again making him "active" again. Problem is that the person remains on the former member list and cannot be removed there?

Hmm, that is a tricky situation.
So your member now has 2 membership periods for that role. One in the past and a new one now. So he is an active member but also a former member.
But you are right. If I choose the view from now than he is now former member. Only if I want to view memberships in the past than he could be listed there.
