User Registration - Existing members

Is there any way that one can Register a user using his/her existing member data (Previously Imported) so as not to create a duplicate record?

You can import the users from a csv or excel file using our import wizard. If the user than register at the page he will be listed in the registration module. If you there accept the registration the system look if user with that lastname and firstname already exists and suggest du combine the login data with the existing user. So no duplicates will be created.

Is there a possibility that the system can look / validate against another profile field, in place of or addition to the lastname and firstname?

With over 9000 members we are encountering too many similar lastname / firstname combinations on new registrations
